When a 10-year-old enterprise software company asks you to build a UX team, you say yes. After 4 months of recruiting, I assembled 4 teams: Interaction Design, UI Design, Accessibility, and Front-End Development. Within 2 years the team was 15 employee-strong and working seamlessly in scrum-based pods across a distributed UX department in Austin and India. The team moved fast and released the single largest product in Tk20’s history.
After a decade of software engineering with no design, you end up with a large set of products that are begging for a new shell. I took on that challenge and plunged into a complete system redesign. They team successfully recreated the entire front-end framework across all 2500 pages of the software, along with a completely redesigned user experience. We developed an internal UI spec website for developers, PO’s and UX team members to collaborate and assist with updates.
The icing on the cake with our product redesign was full compliance with WCAG AA regulations across the entire system. We created an awesome experience for all users and abilities, making Tk20 the first in our market to offer a fully accessible and responsive system that assists teachers, students, and administrators with everything from assignments to accreditation reporting.
